Palenque Mexico

Palenque ligger i Chiapas og er en by berømt for ruinerne af en Maya-by, der daterer sig fra omkring 600 til 800 e.Kr. og blev en UNESCO Verdensarvssted i 1987. Dens mange indgraverede stenplader, indviklede basrelief skulpturer, indlagte masker og andre bemærkelsesværdige udsmykninger giver Palenque en aura af fortryllelse og hellighed. Den 75 fod høje Tempel af Indskrifter indeholder en af de eneste krypter fundet inde i en pyramide i Mexico. Ved udgravning afslørede Pakals grav, en Maya hersker fra det 7. århundrede, et udvalg af juveler, masker, jadeornamenter, vægudskæringer og andre udsøgte artefakter.
