Ouvea Ny Kaledonien

Ouvéa, or Uvea, is the westernmost atoll of the Loyauté Islands archipelago, northeast of New Caledonia. The total area is 132.1 km², with a maximum altitude of 39 m. The island is elongated from north to south formed by two parts joined by a narrow 25 km long isthmus. The northern and southern extremes are extended westward by a barrier of coral and scattered islets. The west coast of the island is a long beach of 25 km. On the island there are two communities, one Polynesian and the other Canaanco, with two languages but with a culture closer to Melanesia. Colonized both from the great island of New Caledonia (Grande-Terre) and from Samoa and Tonga, in the 18th century Polynesian immigrants from the Uvea island of Wallis and Futuna settled down. That is why sometimes Uvea East (Wallis) is distinguished from West Uvea (Ouvéa), and the island is included in the so-called Polynesian outlying islands. This community speaks the western uveano, or faga uvea, very close to the eastern uveano, or wallisiano. The language of the Kanaks of Ouvéa is Laai. The total population was 4,359 inhabitants in the 2004 census, approximately half Polynesian and half Kanaks. The capital is Fayaoué.
